This is a response from awebapart.com to the 2009 review which stated we had no back-up. When the reviewer talks about back-up he is really talking about a real-time fully redundant hosting architecture, which allows for other servers to immediately kick in and serve websites in the event of the primary server or primary data centre failing. In this sense, I completely agree with the reviewer, in that we do not have a fully redundant hosting architecture, and this is the norm (hence the average rating) for most hosting companies. If name servers, data centres, network infrastructure or web servers go down, then in most hosting cases, websites go down too. We do however have back-ups of our sites, back-ups as in offsite recent copies of sites which we can restore from in case our server dies and needs rebuilding, and in 2009 - which wasn't a good year for us hosting wise - we made use of these backups when recovering from catastrophic hardware failure and setting up a new server in a new datacentre, an event which resulted in a day's downtime.
I thought that one of my suppliers had gone out of business because his website had disappeared. It turns out that my stress has been caused by a hosting company with no back-up system. Amateur!
